Steve Barth was born in New Jersey in 1954. He began photographing in 1971.  As a student assistant in the Library of Saguaro High School in Scottsdale Arizona, Steve was handed a Pentax camera, brief instructions for use and a series of photo assignments.  The results, while dismal in retrospect, were exhilarating, and in short order he was hooked on photography!

In 1974 the thrill of 35mm Kodachrome slides gave way to medium format black and white landscape photography.  Largely self-taught, Steve hacked his way through the original Ansel Adams photo book series and became a Zone System adherent.  Photograph of Steve BarthThis proved to be a very frustrating but ultimately rewarding period.

From 1975 through 1982 Steve did a tour in the U. S. Air Force and afterward, with assistance of the GI Bill, studied engineering.  It was during this time frame that Steve moved to large format black and white photography; His first enduring pictures were made and his love of photography deepened.  In October of 1982 Steve relocated to Salt Lake City in Utah where he now lives and photographs.

Steve is approaching retirement from a career with the city of Salt Lake City.  He plans to dedicate his remaining years to full-time photography.  While initially resistant to digital imaging, he now fully embraces digital capture and maturing pigment ink printing technology.  The efficiency of digital workflow allowed Steve to become very prolific in the past 3 years.  He hopes that a post-retirement nomadic photo-oriented lifestyle will further accelerate print making.

The amount of control now available in color printing made it possible for Steve to return to color work.  He shot mostly black and white in the past because it offered the highest level of printing control.  Now there is an amazing amount of control in both color and black and white.  This control makes it possible for Steve to achieve more expressive prints.  The ability to produce expressive prints is the source of his motivation.

Just as digital capture and print technology greatly enhanced expressive print control, related internet technology has enhanced distribution and presentation capability of Photographers. ClearLightPhoto.net allows Steve to present his work to a huge and diverse audience. A feat unthinkable only a decade or so ago. In spite of current global uncertainty, he is anxious to see what the future holds.
